Welcome to Our Lab Site!

Research

Our lab emphasizes freshwater ecology and conservation biology by examining
community-ecosystem linkages. Our major focus has been on the effects of species loss on
ecosystem structure and function.

Some of our specific research areas include landscape ecology, patch dynamics and
hydrologic connectivity. Changes in stream solute chemistry, which have  emerged from our long-term
data set in lowland Costa Rica, have led to a more recent focus on climate change effects on
stream ecosystems  and cascading ecological effects. Our long-term research projects in Costa Rica
and Puerto Rico have been effective in linking scientific research with resource management and
environmental outreach. We also have ongoing projects in Georgia, North Carolina, Panama, and
Trinidad - all of which are detailed under the Research section.

Graduate
Mentorship

Graduate training is a major focus of this laboratory. Twenty-nine students (see lab alumni profiles under the people section) have completed advanced degrees through this lab. I welcome inquiries about graduate opportunities in my lab and encourage prospective students to look at our current research projects. I enjoy working with graduate students and feel that a collegial and interactive group of graduate students is essential to running an effective research program.
